Grant Writer
Eliot Katz joined the staff as a part-time grant writer in October 2008 after contributing to the Center for Constitutional Rights for several years as an occasional freelance writer working on newsletters, grants, and annual reports.
As a poet, he is the author of six books, including Unlocking the Exits (1999) and Love, War, Fire, Wind: Looking Out from North America's Skull (2009). As an activist, Eliot has worked for a wide range of social justice causes, including eight years as a full-time advocate for Central New Jersey homeless families. A cofounder of a national student activist group in the late 1980s called Student Action Union (SAU), Eliot was originally introduced to the Center’s work by CCR cofounder Arthur Kinoy, who served on SAU's advisory board. Current activist projects include Astorians for Peace and Justice; a New York City-based single-payer health care advocacy group, The Private Health Insurance Must Go Coalition; and the PEN Freedom to Write Committee.
