Guantánamo at Year 10: Building a Movement to Close the Prison & End All Unjust U.S. Detentions*

January 11, 2012 marks the shameful tenth anniversary of Guantánamo's opening. Join us in advance of this anniversary and participate in a critical town hall discussion with a range of activists involved in diverse movements to end unjust US prosecutions and detentions.

Speakers: Fasial Hashmi, advocate with Muslim Justice Initiative and brother of Fahad Hashmi who was convicted under broad material support for terrorism charges and is currently in solitary confinement at ADX; Laura Whitehorn, former political prisoner of 14 years and long time political and prisoner’s rights activist, senior editor at POZ Magazine serving people affected with HIV/AIDS; Silky Shah, Field Director at Detention Watch Network & co-producer of Asia Pacific Forum; Pardiss Kebriaei, Staff Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights who has represented men at Guantánamo and other individuals unjustly detained or killed by the U.S. in its “war on terror” both domestically and abroad; Leili Kashani, Guantánamo Global Justice Initiative, Center for Constitutional Rights; Ramzi Kassem, Director of Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility (CLEAR) and Professor at CUNY School of Law who represents men detained at Guantánamo and at Bagram; Anna Brown, professor and activist with Witness Against Torture

We’ll situate GTMO as a deeply important but single piece of a larger unjust US detention system, and seek to deepen and broaden alliances to finally close Guantánamo and build a movement against all unjust US detentions.

The range of issues addressed will include the lack of transparency and accountability in domestic immigration sweeps and detentions; the targeting of Muslim communities and the use of solitary confinement as a means of coercion and punishment in domestic terrorism prosecutions; indefinite detentions without charge or trial at Guantánamo and Bagram prisons; and the long-standing practice of targeting citizens espousing unpopular politics.

Join us, and then help us fill buses heading to DC for a large demonstration in front of the White House on the tenth anniversary of Guantánamo to demand that President Obama close the prison as he promised on his second day in office. Let’s keep building and raising our voices together to shut down GTMO and end abuses at all US detention sites.
