CCR invites you to FilmFest DC’s screening of Guantanamo’s Child: Omar Khadr, a film by Patrick Reed and Michelle Shephard. Following the film, there will be a short talk-back with co-director, reporter, and author Michelle Shephard.

Guantanamo’s Child delivers an intimate portrait of how a teenager from a Toronto suburb became the center of one of the first U.S. war crimes trials since the prosecution of Nazi commanders in the 1940s. In 2002, Omar Khadr was just a teenager when he was captured by the U.S. in Afghanistan and charged with war crimes. In October 2010, Khadr pleaded guilty to five war crimes in return for a plea deal that gave him a chance to return to Canada. After spending nearly half his life behind bars, including a decade at Guantanamo, Khadr was suddenly released. The film features unprecedented access and exclusive interviews with Khadr during his first few days of freedom in Edmonton, where he was released on bail in May 2015.

Guantanamo's Child will be screened on April 17 and April 19. Tickets are $13 and you can buy them through FilmFest DC

CCR is a proud community partner of this screening. At CCR, we believe in the transformative power of art and culture to fuel social justice movements by opening hearts and minds to new possibilities. We believe that stories of struggle and courage, be it in film, journalism, music, or a legal case, have the power to challenge paradigms of oppression and inspire people to seek change. For over a decade, CCR has been at the forefront of the legal battle against indefinite detention and torture at Guantánamo.
