CCR just learned of this important public meeting on the proposed use of Tasers by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) taking place next week. We wanted to reach out to alert you about this development. Should you be interested in attending and / or participating, we are sending along some talking points and a letter we wrote to the Commission and Police Chief asking them to reconsider. Some points you can make during the public portion of the meeting:

  1. TASERs have been found to be lethal weapons, to cause or contribute to fatalities, and cause bodily injury. TASERs can also be a contributing factor to fatalities at the hands of law enforcement.
  2. The international human rights community has expressed concern about the use of electro-shock Devices (or TASERs) by members of law enforcement – and there is growing international consensus that the use of TASERs can constitute a human rights violation.
  3. Instead of TASERs, the SFPD should meaningfully implement alternative and non-lethal tools, including the scaling up of Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and the numbers of officers trained in crisis intervention.

The next public hearing will take place on Monday, Feb. 11 at 6pm at the Bayview Opera House at 4705 Third St.
