Gitmo Attorneys Welcome Transfers, Urge Latin America to Accept More Detainees

December 7, 2014, New York – Today, in response to the transfer to Uruguay of six Guantánamo prisoners who have been cleared for release for years, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) issued the following statement:

We welcome the long-overdue transfer of cleared prisoners from Guantánamo and their resettlement in a third country. It is a reminder that resettlement is a viable option for all the Guantánamo prisoners who have been cleared for release for years, especially for the dozens of Yemenis who remain imprisoned not because of their own actions but because of ostensible concerns about political instability in Yemen.

We urge other Latin American countries to accept men for resettlement, including our client Ghaleb Nassar Al-Bihani, and reiterate our request that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights facilitate dialogue with the U.S. and other countries in the Americas to accept Guantánamo prisoners. By offering homes to men who have long been known to pose no threat, the international community can play a crucial role in closing this dark chapter in American history.

The Center for Constitutional Rights works with communities under threat to fight for justice and liberation through litigation, advocacy, and strategic communications. Since 1966, the Center for Constitutional Rights has taken on oppressive systems of power, including structural racism, gender oppression, economic inequity, and governmental overreach.
