Camilo E. Mejia-Castillo Appeal to the US Court of Appeals of the Armed Forces

Synopsis

Staff Sergeant Mejia-Castillo was discharged for "bad conduct" and sentenced to a year in military prison for refusing to return to fight in Iraq, where "torture and abuse were destroying the lives of the Iraqis." Charged with desertion, he was court-martialed, sentenced to 12 months in a military jail, and reduced in rank from staff sergeant to private.

He is seeking a reversal of his bad conduct discharge, the restoration of rank, and back pay. The Center for Constitutional Rights, together with co-counsel Font & Glazer, Citizen Soldier, and former attorney-general Ramsey Clark, are filing the appeal on his behalf.
