On Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 8:30 a.m., the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati will hear oral argument in Phillips v. Snyder from CCR co-counsel, the Sugar Law Center. Phillips v. Snyder is a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of replacing democratically-elected mayors and city and town councils in predominantly Black and Brown communities of Michigan with unelected, state-appointed “Emergency Managers.”
Counsel will ask the appeals court to reinstate the constitutional and Voting Rights Act claims in the case, which were dismissed by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in November 2014. In March 2016, CCR and Sugar Law Center filed an appeal to the Sixth Circuit.
