This moving story illustrates why solitary confinement is so barbaric.

The landmark 2015 settlement in Ashker v. Governor of California will end long-term solitary for thousands of prisoners in California. Febe Baca tells the story of her husband, Darryl, who was released from solitary after 33 years.

After leaving solitary (the "SHU"), Darryl was allowed to embrace his loved ones for the very first time since 1983.
